Narration in third person of a real event without precise dialogues. Here stand out family values, love and justice. The regime, which had brought down the democratic government of Salvador Allende, is characterized, like so many others in Latin America, by the suppression of civil rights, the torture and the injustice. The main characters, united by their job, will start a friendship which throughout the novel will change into love. They are requested to realize a
story about a girl (Evanglina Ranquilco) to investigate her supposed miracles. In the meantime, the brother of the little girl, who was part of the army, tells his superior (lieutenant Ramirez) the
miracles performed by his sister Evangelina. Aside from producing miracles, she also suffers at times of acute attacks, the result of a mental sickness. The
lieutenant goes to see the girl with the intention to use her supposed special powers, but when he arrives, she is just having one of her attacks. She hits him, he gets offended and goes away. That same night, the lieutenant goes back to the girls house, takes her away, rapes her and kills her. He then burries her next to other bodies somewhere unknown and abandoned. The brother, after hearing what happened to Evangelina, escapes the army and, collaborating with the journalists, brings the story to life. The military send word to kill Irene, but she escapes from the attack. Irene and Francisco make a recording with all the details of the story. The story gets out. The lieutenant is tried and sentenced to prison, but gets out free quite soon. Irene and Francisco escape from their own country with false papers and try to remake their own lives as well as they can.
